I had the honor and opportunity to work with a close friend on a campaign she envisioned after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her husband wanted to create awareness for breast cancer, by creating a mark that was her own and she could share with her community. You see, she and her husband are pirates at our local Renaissance Festival and local piracy functions. She is known and loved by her fellow pirates, and wanted to fight her disease with her personal passion. So she came up with Fight Like A Pirate.
This was a challenge for me. My style is known for being simple, swiss and lack of a better word, cutsie. These are all words that you would not use to describe pirates. She gave me a sketch to go off of, and it was helpful. After researching the ends of the internet for examples of jolly rogers and finding unique costume pieces of the client through photos, I came up with the design above. The side piece is inspired by a head piece her daughter made for you one year at the Ren Fair. Of course, the ribbon on the bandana is for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The client was pleased with the final product and so was I. I was able to challenge my style, without losing my mark. She's already printed the mark on bandanas, playing cards, and bottle openers and plans to expand to t-shirts, bottles and other wearable apparel.
